Editor’s Note, pt 3 — Background and Island

Before you proceed to the collection of my brother’s letters to me from the island, I thought some context should be provided. It may help you understand the controversial actions of my brother there as well as the resulting events that spilled out into Europe later.

Moreau’s Mystery Serum

One of the early bottles of Moreau’s serum. Few still exist (for reasons that will become clear). First appearing in back alley shops. but quickly gaining prominence, these small bottles grew Moreau’s fame and notoriety across the continent very quickly.

The Island

While the exact location of the island I will continue to guard closely, it is located near the western coast of Africa. If you’ve been to the canary islands you may have some small context for it. Though, unusual weather patterns and features of this particular island seem to defy all comparison.

The S.S. Sterling

The ship taken by our group to the island, along with many prominent scientists in Europe, was the S.S. Sterling. It’s location is unknown but currently rumored to be in the Indies. It has never returned to England again.

The Island’s Topography

The island’s topography and geography are unique — consisting of dozens of biomes and micro-climates as a result of its unusual weather patterns. Rocky beaches, thick brush, sharp mountains, and dense fog make travel difficult.

Unusual Creatures

The island is home to a number of unusual creatures. As many scientists have observed, creatures in closed island environments often change and adapt due to island gigantism. However, the changes and adaptations on the island are extreme and beyond those ever observed elsewhere.

As you can see now, what my brother faced on the island was beyond a normal expedition. And the monstrous creatures were the least of his worries in the end.
